i followed the instructions in Google_Maps_for_Sharepoint.doc one after another and during this process i got some errors and questions:

i use a stand-alone server name "ed-058". in step 5, i entered http://ed-058 as the url.

1. is this right?

in step 6, feature is activated by using stsadm. is it possible to activate the feature by using the portal menus? when i go to Application Management section to activate the feature, i just find 4 entries in the list beginning with Office... not the Google Maps Web Part item.

2. why is that?

3. what is the meaning of "MOSS Only"?

although i did the optional sections too. all the 8 parts was done successfully. i want to add the web part to my site. the url is http://ed-058/personal/masoumi-h/default.aspx. i entered this as the url in the step 7.

4. am i right?

after this i came to add the web part to my site. but i couldn't find it in the list.

5. why?

then i decided to add it to the home page of the Central Administration. fortunately, i could find it in the list!

6. why? why is it not available for port 80, but it's available for port 38934? it's deployed for both web applications as in solution manager i see.

this time, but, when i decided to add the web part to the page, i got the following error:

Unable to add selected web part(s).

Google Maps Web Part: A Web Part or Web Form Control on this Page cannot be displayed or imported. The type is not registered as safe.

7. why i got the error?

by relying on my experiences about this error, i remembered that i had to add a line to the web.config of the web application in the SafeControls section.

8. am i right?

9. if so, why it's not documented?

i didn't know how to add the line. i just added the line as follows:

10. is this ok? if not, what line must be added?

now, i'm stalled and don't know what may be the next step.

any clue?

Hi there,

Just wondering whether this Project is still ongoing?

If so, I was wondering how I go about removing the div from under the directions div as this is causing me to have a scroll bar in my web part, which I don't want.

This error can occur if you don't have Visual Studio 2008 extensions for Windows SharePoint Services installed.

Pass...... It was written in VS2008 with .Net 3.5 Not sure if that helps.

yes that would be nice wouldn't it? I could add all my stuff from Nokia Sports Tracker.....

Not sure I'll have the time to do something that will allow KMLs to be created from sharepoint lists but I should be able to add something that will link them to files attached to list items (?) for vNext, whenever that may be.

The assembly is in the GAC - c:\windows\assembly - should be able to get the key etc from there.

When I attempt to open the source code I receive the following error

I've tried to open the source in both VS2005 and VS2008. I also have .NET 2.0 and .NET 3.5 installed. Any Ideas what might be causing this?

This looks great. Have you thought of adding the ability to overlay a KML feed? So the map can display custom layers developed using Arc?

Hi Chris,

Google maps uses div tags to display its maps and a table to display the info bubble. Normally when things like this, or navigation or anything, don't expand to fit the area you expect them to - its normally because of a float:left or position:relative tag.

Thanks for the reply. As a test I applied the same default masterpage from support.wincomtec.com to beth2009.csclivenet and the info balloons expand to show the content. So I will be looking at the CSS files for each masterpage to see if I can figure it out. Do you have any hints on what to look for? Is it possible that it could be something else in the masterpage? I have added a content editor webpart with the css code as contained in other discussions for this webpart. I had to do this in order for the map to display.

On a side note I've found a way to make the text in the description field (from a list) appear on multiple lines. I saw this issue mentioned in some of the other discussions. Whereever I want a line break I simply add "</br>". This is what I used to display the information on Win.Com technologies. I thought you might want to pass this on.

Hi Chris, Do you have any custom css on the pages? I think that could be the cause. I'm having a few problems rendering the pages in Firefox. I'm wondering if you have any custom div or td styles that are being inheritted between the different sites. Mike

I have two sites, both WSS 3.0, using this webpart. With one site the info bubble resizes based on the information displayed. The other site the info bubble stays the same and some of the information, like the directions link are outside the bubble.

The sites are: http://support.wincomtec.com and the other is http://beth2009.csclivenet.net (select the Map & Directions link on the Quick Launch)

Does anyone have any ideas on what causes this and how to fix it.

I made it work!

I can now display the map. Just add the following to your CSS page:

float:left;
width:70%;
height:500px;
}

#side_bar
{
float:right;
width:28%;
height:500px;
overflow:scroll;
}

#directions
{
height:300px;
overflow:scroll;
}
